the survival of endangered wildlife species.

Asian elephant

There are only 30,000 to 50,000 Asian elephants left and the homes of these elephants are being cleared for many reasons including warfare, agriculture development, human settlement and logging.

Douc langur

The Douc langur is being hunted for food and its body parts, which are used in the preparation of traditional medicines. During the Vietnam war, its forest habitat was destroyed by defoliating agents and bombs, leading to the species being endangered.

Orang utan

Both the Sumatran and Bornean orang utans live in rainforests and are threatened with habitat destruction, forest fires and poaching for the illegal pet trade. It is estimated that there are 55,000 Bornean orang utans, and only 7,500 Sumatran orang utans left in the wild, making this species critically endangered.

Proboscis monkey

Proboscis monkeys are found in the mangrove and peat swamp forests of Borneo. Much of their habitat has been subjected to land reclamation, clearing for monoculture plantations and logging. Habitat destruction and hunting will continue to threaten these already endangered monkeys.

Pygmy hippopotamus

Deforestation and hunting are two of the main threats that pygmy hippos face. It is estimated that there are only slightly over 3,000 pygmy hippos left in the wild.
