Service Learning

Students get to do their part in wildlife conservation as the Zoo celebrates the new birth of Service Learning Programme this year. Aimed at students ranging from primary to university levels, this programme seeks to extend the walls of the classroom to include the rich expanse of the Zoo. Students will get the opportunity to initiate an enrichment programme or educate their friends as they discover all things conservation.

Service Learning was launched on 27 February 2005 as students from Tampines Junior College set out to learn about the functions of signage in the Zoo. Not only did the students get to heighten their observation skills, they also had their hands on recommending changes.

SPH Foundation Wildlife Buddies

Conceptualized for the upper primary students, SPH Foundation Wildlife Buddies is part of the Service Learning Programmes where students are given the chance to play the roles of teachers and leaders. Through active learning about the animals and the environment, and interaction with peers, these students will foster a deeper sense of conservation. This service learning process will also help develop confidence in themselves.

Students will be trained by Education staff on selected exhibits. With their newfound knowledge, can then help spread conservation messages about the animals to their buddies, or design a trail for the younger students.
